A nursery or kids' room floor does a different job than any other floor in the house — it's a play surface, a crawling surface, and eventually a surface that gets drawn on, spilled on, and sat on for hours at a time. The things that matter here aren't the same things that matter in a living room.
What you're actually optimising for
Four things, in rough order of importance for a child's room: low-VOC materials (since kids spend more floor-level time breathing closer to the surface than adults do), no grout lines to trap dust or allergens, genuinely easy cleanup for the inevitable spills and messes, and a surface that won't look dated or damaged in five years when the room gets repurposed.
Our Nursery / Kid's Room Floor Kit is formulated around exactly this list — a low-VOC, water-based system from primer through sealer, so there's no strong off-gassing smell during or after application, which matters more in a smaller, more enclosed room than it does in open living spaces.
No grout means no dust trap
Grout lines collect dust, and dust is one of the more common allergen concerns in a child's room. A seamless microcement floor has nowhere for dust, crumbs, or allergens to settle into — a quick sweep or damp mop actually gets the whole surface, not just the visible tile faces between the grout lines.
Spills, crayons, and the occasional accident
Once sealed, microcement is non-porous — water-based paint, juice, and crayon wax all wipe up without staining or soaking in, which is not something you can say about every flooring option. A damp cloth and a mild, pH-neutral cleaner is genuinely enough for daily cleanup; nothing specialist required for normal kid-level mess.
Underfoot comfort and temperature
Microcement is compatible with underfloor heating, which matters more in a nursery than almost any other room — a warm floor for a crawling baby isn't a luxury detail, it's a comfort one. If the room doesn't have underfloor heating, a soft area rug over microcement works fine too; it doesn't require bare feet on bare surface the way some flooring marketing implies.
Is it actually safe underfoot?
A matte-finish microcement surface has reasonable everyday grip, comparable to a smooth tile or painted floor. If the room sees a lot of running, jumping, or very active play, the textured anti-slip finish we developed for pet-friendly floors (covered in our pet-friendly flooring guide) is worth considering here too — the same traction logic applies to a toddler moving at full speed as it does to a dog.
Designing around a room that will change
A nursery becomes a toddler's room, becomes a kid's room, becomes eventually something else entirely. Because microcement is a neutral, continuous surface rather than a themed pattern, it ages with the room instead of needing to be replaced when the decor changes — unlike patterned tile or vinyl, which tends to date a room to the year it was installed.
